ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION AT KiK
We are committed to continuously reducing our ecological footprint and the impact of our business operations and products on people and the environment. We recognize that the textile and apparel industry is one of the largest in the EU in terms of resource consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. That’s why we focus on systematically reducing CO₂ emissions and managing chemicals in a conscious and responsible way. Additionally, we are working to gradually shift our textile products toward more sustainable materials.

Our Climate and Energy Management
We set clear targets to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption — in line with the Paris Climate Agreement and the latest scientific findings. To achieve these goals, we are committed to prioritizing energy efficiency in the planning, procurement and operation of our sites and to increasing our use of renewable energy. We consistently implement measures to reduce CO₂ emissions across both our own operations and our upstream and downstream value chains.
In 2018, we joined the Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action and in 2025, we will become a signatory to the Science Based Targets Initiative.
KiK annually calculates its corporate carbon footprint (CCF) in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol Standard. The CCF covers all relevant locations under KiK’s operational control. In addition to direct (Scope 1) and indirect (Scope 2) emissions, relevant indirect emissions from our upstream and downstream value chain (Scope 3) are also included. The following Scope 3 categories are considered:
- Purchased goods and services
- Capital goods
- Fuel- and energy-related emissions
- Transportation and distribution (upstream and downstream)
- Operational waste
- Business travel
- Employee commuting
- Use of sold products
- Disposal of sold products
A core focus of our environmental management is critically examining our resource use and waste management. Our goal is to reduce negative environmental impacts. To achieve this, we focus on minimizing our material consumption in our operating business, such as paper consumption in our administration. Secondly, we are pursuing a gradual reduction in the consumption of materials and resources for our products and product packaging and are also looking at the recyclability of our textile products.
Examples of measures include:
- Use of FSC- or „Blauer Engel“-certified paper products
- Implementation of the Recup reusable system in the staff cafeteria at our Bönen headquarters
- Procurement of certified products containing recycled materials, such as GRS- and RCS-certified items
We are committed to reducing freshwater consumption and ensuring the efficient use of chemicals both in our operations and throughout our supply chain. Through effective chemical and wastewater management, we prevent pollution of water bodies and soil and improve occupational safety when handling chemicals. KiK is a member of the multi-stakeholder initiative Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemicals (ZDHC) and is committed to implementing ZDHC guidelines for the reduction and substitution of hazardous substances, as well as for wastewater management.

PARTNERS AND MEMBERSHIPS
At KiK, we believe that engaging in multi-stakeholder partnerships is key to achieving social, environmental, and structural improvements within the textile industry.

ZDHC is a global initiative working to eliminate the use and discharge of hazardous chemicals in the textile and footwear industries. Founded by a group of leading fashion and sportswear brands, ZDHC aims to reduce the industry’s environmental footprint by promoting stricter chemical management practices and encouraging more sustainable production processes.
